- Teen drivers have the highest crash risk of any age group. 78% of accidents involving 16 year old drivers are due to driver error. So talk to your kids about paying attention to the road, and not talking on the phone or to their friends. By teaching your kids to make responsible driving decisions, you help keep them and other on the roadway safe.
- Driving at night is a high risk activity for beginners. The fatal crashes rate for 16 year old drivers is nearly twice as high as during the day. Make sure your kids are following license restrictions. It could save their life.
- 16 year old drivers are more likely than any other group of drivers to be involved in fatal crashes involving high speeds. Keep your kids safe and talk to them about the importance of obeying posted speed limits.
- Teen agers are less likely than adults to use their seatbelts. Talk to your kids about the importance of buckling up and obeying the laws.

In the last couple of months someone has been driving by and taking pictures of our house. This seems to happening at least once a week. My 90 year old mother-in-law and grandson, who lives with us, are very afraid. Our neighbors have seen people taking pictures of our house also. We live on a dead end street and when we see them slow and start taking pictures and we go out to get their plate number they speed off. What can we do to stop this? Thanks, harry
You most definately need to call which ever agency patrols you area and give them the license plate number. We can contact the owner of the vehicle and find out what is going on. Make sure and do this ASAP. Craig.

When traveling on a 3-lane road such as I-90 through much of Spokane and there are cars in both the outside left and right lanes, who has the right of way to merge to the center lane? Seems like there is constant hesitaton between drivers in this scenario. Thanks, Jared
Common sense and courtesy will cover you a majority of the time. If you both start changing lanes at the same time get back into your lane and be patient. Hopefully the other vehicle is paying attention as well. Good question, kind of one of those situations where whoever makes the initial lane change has the right of way. Craig.

Deputy Craig, I understand a child has to sit in the back seat until 13 years old. I am told now that they can ride in the front seat as long as the air bag is off. Is this true? I have 4 grandkids and I need to know the facts. Thank you. Julie
Not true. Kids under 13 should be in the back "when practicle". If you have your other grandkids in the back and the oldest doesn't have anywhere to sit, you are good to go. Just make sure the seatbelt fits properly accross their shoulder and not their neck. Craig.

if i was charged with B&E at the age of 15 could i get my licens when im 16?
That is a decision the courts and the Department of Licensing would determine. Craig.

how old do you have to be to stay home alone over 24hours
11 yrs old is usually the rule of thumb. However, there are many 11 yr olds that are not responsible enough to stay by themselves, ie not knowing what to do in case of an emergency. I always encourage parents to guage the maturity and responsibility level of their kids and make their decision based on their judgement. Craig.

if you get 3 trafic violations such as driving with people under 20 when you dont have your 6 months, improper use of licese plate, and defective license plate lights, all in one stop, can i lose my license until i turn 18?
Absolutely. I am not sure what you mean by improper use of the license plate. I am guessing you mean switched or altered plates??? Either way you are at the mercy of DOL while you are under the intermediate restriction and these violations will not help you out at all. I do not know DOL's criteria as far as when and for how long they suspend driver's licenses. Craig.

My 10 year old son wants an airsoft gun. Is it legal to shoot airsoft guns within city limits? What about bb guns? Is there an age limit on either of these? Thank you Deputy Craig!
The absolute safest thing I can tell you is to go out to a wooded or remote area, have adult supervision and make sure they are not shooting eachother. Airsoft hurts, we train with them. You are opening yourself up to liability if someone gets hurt. What about Lazer Quest? Craig.

Can a police officer search your vehicle during a traffic stop due to a 6yr. old being a restrained passenger in the front seat?
No. In Washington we can only search your vehicle with your consent or if an arrest is made and there is possible evidence related to that arrest inside your vehicle. Craig.

At the corner of 16th and Pines, cars going North-South must yield to East-West but do cars going South ever have to yield to Northbound cars that want to turn left. Is it first to intersection has right of way like at 4 way stops or is it cars going straight have right of way over cars turning?
Basic rules of the road. Whoever arrives at the stop sign first has the right of way. Craig.

What is the law in using a vehicle horn ? I had a friend that was sitting at a stop light and when it changed to green the vehicle in front did not move. He hit his horn and when they did move a CDA police officer sitting behind him pulled him over a little upset and told him that the horn was for emergency only. I am told that it was a light tap on the horn but who knows. Thanks for any responce.
I am not familiar with Idaho law but I do know I have never seen any law specifying any criteria for using your horn in Washington State. Craig.
