Deputy Craig's Teen Driving Safety Tips
Brought to you by your local GEICO office in Spokane - 509.328.1422- Teen drivers have the highest crash risk of any age group. 78% of accidents involving 16 year old drivers are due to driver error. So talk to your kids about paying attention to the road, and not talking on the phone or to their friends. By teaching your kids to make responsible driving decisions, you help keep them and other on the roadway safe.
- Driving at night is a high risk activity for beginners. The fatal crashes rate for 16 year old drivers is nearly twice as high as during the day. Make sure your kids are following license restrictions. It could save their life.
- 16 year old drivers are more likely than any other group of drivers to be involved in fatal crashes involving high speeds. Keep your kids safe and talk to them about the importance of obeying posted speed limits.
- Teen agers are less likely than adults to use their seatbelts. Talk to your kids about the importance of buckling up and obeying the laws.

At an uncontrolled intersection do turning cars ever have right of way over cars going straight? Is it like a 4 way stop where first one there has right of way or do turning cars always yield to cars going straight? The corner of Pines and 16th is where this comes up.At 16th and Pines East and West traffic on 16th have the right of way. North and South bound traffic on Pines have to wait until they can safely enter the roadway. Craig.

how old do you have to be to stay home by yourself?I am confident with my 13 yr old staying home alone. I also have an 11 yr old that knows what to do in case of an emergency that I am ok with leaving with her younger sister for a short amount of time. Craig.

I drive through a residential street on my way to my house. Kids are constantly playing out in the streets in front of one particular house on this street, where its been bad to the point that the driver would have to drive around the kids. The parents of the kids sit there and holler at the drivers when they drivers honk at the kids. What is the proper way to approach this? Do we have to wait till a kid gets hit? What are Spokane County laws about playing in the middle of the road? Please advise, thank you.Here's the deal. No, you can't intentionally disrupt traffic flow, it's called disorderly conduct. However, obviously kids playing is a different situation. Call crime check and have us talk to the parents to see if we can help. if all your seatbelts are taken up in your truck can someone sit in the bed if the truck?Yes, for a reasonable distance. Also, the belts have to be used up by anyone 16 and under. Also, common sense comes into play here.. Do not put little kids in the back for obvious safety reasons. Craig.

My daughter in law moved out of our home a yr ago Aug 3 and every since has made threats against son and the rest of the family over and over. What can I do about this and who do I report this toContact crime check and get a report number. If she is making threats that you are concerned she may carry out we can deal with that, especially if they are to injure, that type of deal. Best ammo for us is for you to get a protection order against her. You can do this at the courthouse and have our civil deputy's serve it to her so there is no gray area. She violates any of the stipulations, she goes to jail. Craig.

can i park in residental road when there no walkway or curb.there a gravel patch where i park can i have one wheel on the road will i get a notice to get towed if i do this. because i did get towed. 300 hundred dallors worth who do i talk to about the bill to reverse it.The only thing you can do is contact the agency that impounded your vehicle and see about a contested hearing. However, if you were partially on the road you are kind of stuck, especially if it is a busy road. In the future make sure you are totally off the road and you will be ok. Craig.

I know there is a law that you cant impede traffic driving to slow, but as you know driving slower saves fuel, now i was always under the impression that as long as you had a orange triangle on the back of your vehicle it would be ok to drive slow as long as you pulled over when there was 5 or more cars behind you is this right?The 5 or more vehicles is correct, as far as slowing traffic. As far as the orange triangle that is for farm equipment which is only allowed a certain distance from the property itself. Let me know if you want to know more about the exempt portion on farm equipment and I will pick our commercial vehicle officer's mind and let you know all the rules. That is out of my specialty so I don't want to mislead you. Craig.
